TODAY: Bronx Advocates and Residents Say NO to Cross Bronx Expansion

Local residents and environmental justice advocates urge NYSDOT to redirect funds for a $150M highway expansion project that would increase traffic, worsen air quality, cut green space, and hurt neighborhood health

BRONX, NY (06/05/2025) (readMedia)-- Today, the Stop the Cross Bronx Expansion coalition will rally with local residents outside a New York State Department of Transportation public meeting. The group will demand the agency cancel its proposed unnecessary roadway expansion of the five Cross Bronx Expressway (CBE) bridges along Interstate 95.

The Cross Bronx Expressway is already one of the most congested and polluted corridors in the country. In the borough with the highest childhood asthma rates, the $150 million proposal would increase traffic and build an additional highway over the Bronx River and recently expanded Starlight Park. The highway would directly impact four neighborhoods, especially the 3,000 nearby public housing residents at Bronx River Houses. The coalition is urging NYSDOT to reject the current plans to build a second highway structure in favor of a standard bridge repair - an alternative that protects local parks and prioritizes community health and safety.

The rally will begin at 5 P.M., ahead of the 6 P.M. public meeting.
