TODAY: State Representatives and Community Leaders to Rally Monday for Voting Reforms

NEW YORK, NY (06/10/2019) (readMedia)-- This year, the New York Legislature passed historic voting reforms ?–? such as early voting and consolidated primaries ?–? that help break down barriers to voting. But with the legislative session ending in just two weeks, voting rights advocates are calling on the Legislature to pass additional critical voting reforms, including automatic voter registration and restoration of voting rights to people on parole. In 2018, New York was ranked 48 out of 50 in voter turnout. If enacted, automatic voter registration would register 1.1 million New Yorkers; studies show it's an effective way of increasing voter participation.

On Monday, state lawmakers and community leaders will join Syracuse residents in a rally in support of those additional reforms. The rally is being organized by Let New York, which is a coalition of over 150 organizations that includes Public Citizen, Stand Up America, and CWA.
