Tamms Soldier Becomes Newest General of the Illinois Army National Guard

SPRINGFIELD, IL (01/09/2011)(readMedia)-- Col. Johnny Miller of Tamms was promoted to the rank of brigadier general Jan. 8 in a ceremony held on Camp Lincoln in Springfield.

He serves as assistant to the Illinois National Guard Adjutant General – Army and deputy commander of the Illinois Army National Guard in all matters pertaining to supervision and management of the Illinois Army National Guard.

The Illinois Army National Guard has 10,000 Soldiers, will perform missions in support of overseas military operations, homeland security and state active duty. Miller is directly responsible for the Illinois Army National Guard's overall readiness, operation, training, maintenance and logistical support. Miller is also responsible for the health and welfare, morale, discipline and safety of Illinois Army National Guard Soldiers and their families.

"I am both honored and humbled by this selection," said Miller. "I look forward to working hard to serve the Soldiers and families of the Illinois Army National Guard to the best of my ability. My goal is to work with our leadership to continue to help posture Illinois for success in all categories."

Miller commissioned as a second lieutenant in 1984 after graduating Wentworth Military Academy. He has held various command and staff positions throughout his career; from platoon leader to brigade commander. Miller has served as an officer to the Illinois Army National Guard for more than 25 years.

Miller deployed to Afghanistan as the commanding officer of the Illinois Army National Guard's International Security Assistance Forces team, now known as a bilateral embedded staff team, from January 2009 to December 2009 serving with Polish Land Forces with in support of Operation Enduring Freedom.

With his promotion Miller assumed duties as the Joint Force Headquarters-Illinois Army

National Guard Assistant Adjutant General following in the footstep of recently retired Brig. Gen. Ronald Morrow of Girard.

"I want to acknowledge Brigadier General Morrow for his mentorship and wish he and his family all the best in his recent retirement," said Miller. "I would also like to take this opportunity to thank the leadership for their faith in me and our Soldiers for the outstanding job they do every day."
