Junior guard Taylor Smith of the Oglethorpe University Women's Basketball team was named the Southern Athletic Association Women's Basketball Player of the Week on Feb. 3 by the league's office.
It marks the first such award of her Oglethorpe career and the Stormy Petrels' second SAA weekly award of the season. A Politics major, Smith is from Plantation, FL and a graduate of American Heritage School.
Smith led the Petrels to a pair of victories over Rhodes College and Hendrix College on Friday and Sunday, helping her team clinch the No. 1 seed in the SAA Tournament and at least a share of the SAA regular season title. Smith averaged 15 points and 11 rebounds per game, also adding three assists and four steals per contest. In Sunday's title-clinching 78-71 win at Rhodes, she scored 18 points and grabbed 13 rebounds, adding four assists and six steals.
For the season, Smith is second on the SAA leaderboard in offensive rebounding, coming up with 3.3 per game to put her behind her own teammate, Savannah LeGate. She's also second in field goal attempts and third in field goal makes, going 128-for-294 so far and accruing a 43.5 percent shooting mark. This puts her at fifth in the league in that category. She is also fourth in total rebounds (165) and fifth in free throw attempts (93).
