The Summit FCU receives statewide financial education award

ALBANY, N.Y. – The Summit Federal Credit Union received the New York Credit Union Association's prestigious Desjardins Youth Financial Education Award. The award was presented to The Summit FCU during NYCUA's 2015 Annual Meeting and Convention, held June 11-14 in Bolton Landing, New York. The Rochester-based credit union received the statewide award in the asset category of more than $500 million and will now advance to the Credit Union National Association's national competition.

In 2014, the credit union helped educate youths in the greater Rochester-area through several educational modules, which included: Mad City Money, Teens and Money, Credit Unions and Money, Questions About Money, and Checking and Savings Accounts. The Summit FCU hosted the sessions in elementary schools, high schools, community buildings and public libraries, and each session focused on a specific area of financial education.

The Desjardins Youth Financial Education Award is named after credit union and cooperative pioneer Alphonse Desjardins, who helped establish the first U.S. credit union in New Hampshire in 1909. Desjardins was an ardent believer in the value of teaching children to save, and he promoted the idea of in-school savings programs.

The New York Credit Union Association has served as the trade association for the state's credit unions for 98 years. With more than 5 million memberships, New York credit union assets total more than $70 billion. To learn more about NYCUA, visit www.nycua.org.
