Third Quarter 2012 Rochester Patent Index Released

ROCHESTER, NY (10/22/2012)(readMedia)-- Hoffman Warnick LLC (HW), an intellectual property law firm with offices in Albany, Rochester, and Boston has released the Rochester Patent Index for Third Quarter 2012. The "Rochester Patent Index" includes both (1) patent issuances and (2) patent applications filed for Monroe and Ontario Counties with and without the contributions of XEROX and KODAK.

The total of issuances and filings from Rochester over the last year largely follows the national trend. However, Rochester's numbers remained steady during a significant drop in the national numbers between the third and fourth quarters of 2011, suggesting that the local economy may be more resilient than that of the nation overall. Compared to a year ago, all the numbers are higher, but the most marked change is in the number of issuances, which has increased steadily since January, both with and without the contributions of Kodak and Xerox. The number of applications filed has dipped slightly since the end of this year's second quarter, again both with and without the contributions of Kodak and Xerox. This could indicate that, while Kodak and Xerox add significantly to the numbers, they follow the same trends as smaller local companies. The steady growth in filings this year may indicate that the local economy continues to improve across the board. The slight dip in filings this quarter may simply be a seasonal slowdown.

An example of the technology being developed in the Rochester area is recently issued US patent 8,221,891, entitled "Coating Composition and Surface Layer," assigned to Xerox Corporation. The disclosed coating can be applied to imaging device components, providing hydrophobic and oleophilic properties that improve output quality in ink jet and electrophotographic printing.
