BATAVIA, NY (02/25/2013)(readMedia)-- The way Lou Piccone sees it, a college scholarship is "a hand up." Piccone is helping to raise funds for Genesee Community College scholarships as honorary chairman of this year's Trek the Trail Walkin' n' Talkin'. Piccone spoke this week at a news conference on the GCC Batavia Campus. He looks forward to joining participants for Trek the Trail Walkin n' Talkin' on Saturday, April 20, 2013.
Predominantly a wide receiver, Piccone played as many as 11 different positions for the Buffalo Bills from 1977 to 1982. He likened himself to Mikey from the old Life cereal commercials. "Give the job to Lou, he'll do it," Piccone mused. He said he never intended to go to college, but football took him to West Liberty State, a small school in Wheeling, WV. He won a spot on the team as a walk-on and learned skills on the field and in the classroom that have served him well. "After the NFL, what do you do?" Piccone asked. "I had an education."
Piccone has participated in many charitable events throughout western New York and readily agreed to chair Trek the Trail when asked by friend and GCC Foundation board member Russ Romano. Romano praised Piccone's participation. "We hope to raise a lot more money this year as we work to grow this great event," Romano said. "This is a fun time for the family and our community." Romano introduced several community members who have stepped up to lead fundraising divisions. They include:
• Joanna Barefoot, GCC Student Activities, Student Clubs Division
• Marlin Salmon, Triftshauser & Salmon Orthodontics, Medical / Dental Division
• Marc Staley, LPL Financial, Small Business Division
• Eric Sandler, GCC Athletics and Andrew Crofts, Sports Information, GCC Athletics Division
• Nate Shirk, Nothnagle Realtors, Business/Restaurants/Lodging/Service Clubs Division
• Andrew Maguire, Five Star Bank, Banking Division
Romano encouraged people to use the easy online registration at www.gccfoundation.kintera.org/trek. Trek the Trail Walkin' 'n Talkin' is a stroll around the GCC campus, inclusive of the nature trail. Cougar stops along the trail enhance the fun for all ages. Registration is $15 per participant, which includes a T-shirt, picnic lunch, prizes and treats. Children eight and under are free.
Genesee Community College last year awarded 542 scholarships to students totaling more than $263,000.
