NASHUA, N.H. (06/06/2012)(readMedia)-- Porsche's seventh-generation 911 has only been at Porsche dealerships since February, but the sports car specialist is already coming out with a special-edition model that could make even the biggest collector jealous. Featuring exclusive touches like a Brewster Green exterior and screened lettering of the owner's name in the trim, the Porsche 911 Club Coupe commemorates 60 years of Porsche Clubs and will only be available to a handful of lucky members.
Porsche claims that its first owners club started in 1952 in Germany with only 13 members, and to recognize that fact the same number of 911 Club Coupes will be produced. Today, there are more than 181,000 Porsche Club members, and they'll have to enter a drawing at www.porsche.com/911-club-coupe by July 16 for a chance to win the privilege of buying the bespoke 911. Based on the 2012 Porsche 911 Carrera S, the Club Coupe adds a SportDesign exterior package, 20-inch SportTechno wheels and illuminated door sills that include 60th anniversary and model designation logos.
"The 911 Club Coupe's very limited production is a highly attractive way to showcase Porsche's rich history with its customers, but only the luck of the draw is going to decide who its owners will be," said Larry Bedell, general manager of Porsche of Nashua, a New Hampshire Porsche dealer. "On the other hand, there are plenty of 911 Carrera S models available to members and non-members alike, and they've been completely redesigned for the 2012 model year to be more powerful and stylish than ever."
While the 911 Club Coupe gets a Powerkit providing 30 additional horsepower, the 2012 Porsche 911 Carrera S's 400-horsepower, 3.8-liter boxer engine is no slouch, pumping out 15 more horsepower compared to the previous generation. The redesigned 911 is also lower, longer, wider and 100 pounds lighter than its predecessor, allowing the 2012 Carrera S to jet from zero to 60 mph in just 4.1 seconds and reach a top speed of 188 mph.
The latest generation of the Porsche 911 offers levels of performance previously unseen from the iconic sports car, but driving enthusiasts on an unlimited quest for power may want to save up for the forthcoming Porsche 918 Spyder. A plug-in hybrid boasting more than 770 horsepower, the 918 Spyder will combine a mid-mounted 570-horsepower V8 engine and dual electric motors to not only achieve eye-opening performance, but also potentially return up to 78 mpg.
Even in all-electric mode, the Porsche 918 Spyder is expected to reach a top speed of 90 mph, while a shift to full power should boost that number to around 200 mph. Porsche recently announced that it has begun prototype testing, and the 918 Spyder should go on sale in the United States late next year as a 2014 model. Though it won't be quite as rare as the 911 Club Coupe, there will only be 918 of the super sports cars built.
"It's likely that the 918 Spyder will only be a fantasy for most Porsche fans, but the supercar features a host of innovative technologies that should make their way into the rest of the lineup soon enough," added Bedell. "Beyond its advanced hybrid drivetrain, the 918 Spyder uses carbon fiber reinforced plastic and adaptive aerodynamics in new ways to create a mix of power and fuel efficiency that was previously unheard of."
