Updated: NYS AFL-CIO Is Deeply Disappointed by Failure of James Zadroga Health & Compensation Bill

Labor Federation Calls for Immediate Vote Under Regular Rules of Order

ALBANY, NY (07/30/2010)(readMedia)-- Denis Hughes, President of the 2 ½ million member New York State AFL-CIO, issued the following statement on last night's vote regarding the James Zadroga 9-11 Health & Compensation Bill:

"The NYS AFL-CIO is deeply disappointed by failure of the James Zadroga 9-11 Health & Compensation Bill.

With each passing day the heroic men and women who risked their lives that fateful day are further removed from the consciousness of the American people. It is unfathomable that our elected officials have allowed almost nine years to go by without even remotely beginning to pay back the tremendous debt we owe these American heroes.

We continue to appreciate the leadership, dedication and commitment displayed by Congresswoman Maloney, Congressman Nadler and Congressman King. Unfortunately, they can't do it alone. The time for playing politics is over.

This bill received a clear majority of support. It is now time to bring it up for a vote under regular rules of order. We implore Congress to finally take a stand and pass this bill that only begins to show the respect and appreciation our 9-11 heroes so justly deserve."
