Vancouver native participates in civil rights awareness project

WALLA WALLA, WA (01/25/2012)(readMedia)-- Olivia Mitchell of Vancouver is currently participating in "Whitman Teaches the Movement" a partner project between Whitman College in Walla Walla, Wash., Walla Walla Public Schools, and the Southern Poverty Law Center, a facility based in Montgomery, Ala.

The goal of the project is to increase awareness about the civil rights movement among elementary school students. A group of over 100 Whitman College students will be teaching classes in local schools and focusing on different aspects of the movement in each grade.

Mitchell, the daughter of Holly Chamberlain and Charlie Mitchell, is a 2008 graduate of the Vancouver School of Arts and Academics. She is currently a senior art history and visual culture studies major at Whitman.
