WORK BEGINS ON ROUTE 17 EXIT 122 INTERCHANGE PROJECT

Lane Closures to Impact Traffic Starting Next Week

ALBANY, NY (03/14/2014)(readMedia)-- The New York State Department of Transportation (NYSDOT) today announced that major work is beginning on the project to reconstruct the Route 17 Exit 122 interchange in the town of Wallkill, Orange County. The $69 million project began last year, but has been on hiatus for the winter. Construction will start again next week and will require lane closures and traffic crossovers that are expected to impact traffic.

Lane closures are as follows:

Route 17

Beginning just west of Exit 121 (I84 Interchange), through Exit 122 (Crystal Run Road) to just east of the Wallkill River bridge: Eastbound traffic will be crossed over to the westbound roadway and be separated from westbound traffic by concrete barrier.

Preparation for the traffic switch is scheduled to begin 7 a.m. on Thursday, March 21. Traffic will be crossed over that night at some point between midnight and 7 a.m. Friday morning.

Traffic in both directions on Route 17 will be stopped briefly, for a short period of time, during the traffic switch. These stoppages will be performed and controlled by the NYS Police.

East Main Street

East Main Street traffic lanes between Midway Road and Route 17 will be reduced to a single lane of alternating one-way traffic on an intermittent basis each day from Monday, March 17 to Friday, March 28 between 9 a.m. and 4 p.m. Advance warning signs will be installed next week to alert the traveling public of the traffic restrictions.

Crystal Run Road

Crystal Run Crossing traffic lanes will be reduced to one lane in each direction with no turning lanes starting Friday, March 21 until the end of this construction season in November 2014. The limits of this work are from Crystal Run Crossing to past the Holiday Inn/NYS Police/ORMC (Pavillion).

Motorists are asked to use caution when traveling through the work area and pay particular attention to all traffic control devices, including work zone signs and flaggers. Travelers are also reminded that fines are doubled for speeding in a work zone. In accordance with the Work Zone Safety Act of 2005, convictions of two or more speeding violations in a work zone could result in the suspension of the driver's license.
