HOUGHTON, MI (03/11/2013)(readMedia)-- Mellisa Wright, a materials science and engineering student at Michigan Technological University, is currently studying at James Cook University in Australia. The Menominee native has also received the Presidential Excellence Scholarship.
Of her visit so far, Wright says, "Studying abroad has afforded me many opportunities to check items off my bucket list, including scuba diving the Great Barrier Reef, holding a koala and driving on the "wrong" side of the road! The classes are run differently here. University is more focused on independent work, and students have to take a lot of responsibility for themselves from day one in order to succeed. I'm looking forward to continuing my immersion into the Australian culture and catching a great tan while I'm at it!."
In Michigan Tech's Study Abroad program, students take university courses overseas and broaden their perspectives in several ways. They grow personally, through an exposure to new cultures and places; academically, through access to courses not available at Michigan Tech and from different perspectives on topics taught at Michigan Tech; and professionally, as companies often hire students who have traveled and studied abroad.
