MASTIC, NY (03/27/2008)(readMedia)-- The endorsed Republican candidate for New York’s First Congressional District today expressed sincere disappointment in the lack of federal support to help fund a Suffolk County-wide sewer program.
“In an open letter released by my opponent regarding sewers says absolutely nothing about receiving direct, substantial funding from Congress to assist the Suffolk County government in constructing a countywide sewer program,” said Lee Zeldin, running to represent Eastern Long Island in Congress. “Talk is cheap and complacency by our elected officials is unacceptable…just get us the money.”
Zeldin supports a countywide sewer program to allow Suffolk’s economy to once again flourish, lowering property taxes and Long Island’s unreasonably high cost of living. The candidate also opposed a piecemeal, interim solution.
“This problem has been unaddressed for too long. We need bold solutions that will take care of more then one corner of our county at a time,” said Zeldin.
In response to Congressman Tim Bishop’s open letter to constituents, Zeldin said, “I don’t care about money allocated to Suffolk County sewers in 1972. We need money in 2008 to break ground on a countywide sewer project.”
Bishop’s letter blamed President Bush as the reason why the necessary sewer funding hasn’t come from Washington but failed to mention Bishop’s silence in Congress on the countywide sewer solution.
“This is the problem with politics,” said Zeldin. “Too often, our elected leadership only pays lip service to our problems and is much too content in passing blame. In the First CD, we are a results-based constituency, not an excuse-based constituency.”
Zeldin served as an aide to State Senator Kenneth P. LaValle. The Shirley resident studied at the University at Albany, graduated from Albany Law School, and earned his commission through Army ROTC. He was a paratrooper, prosecutor and magistrate with the 82nd Airborne Division and XVIII Airborne Corps. In the summer of 2006, he was a JAG attorney deployed to Iraq. He is currently an attorney at Raiser & Kenniff on Long Island.
