MASTIC, NY (04/14/2008)(readMedia)-- The endorsed Republican candidate for Long Island’s First Congressional District renewed his call on Congress to provide federal funding for a countywide sewer system necessary for Suffolk to adapt to the 21st Century.
Lee Zeldin, endorsed Republican candidate to represent the Eastern Long Island District, said that except for some areas on the eastern tip of Long Island, a countywide sewer system is a necessity to attract investment, protect the environment and ensure that Suffolk finally modernizes in a critical area where by all measures, the County severely lags.
“Suffolk County needs sewers to protect our groundwater and revitalize our downtowns,” said Zeldin. “Unfortunately for homeowners and investors throughout Eastern Suffolk, we are represented by individuals who fail to understand the gravity of this need.”
Responding to a noncommittal quote attributed to his opponent in a recent Press of Manorville and Moriches article that failed to provide specifics and blamed others for the sewer shortcomings, Zeldin highlighted this lack of action and understanding.
“My opponent is content with pointing fingers and only speaks in broad strokes about the general importance of infrastructure to our communities,” said Zeldin. “He’s had three terms to get us to where we need to be. We’re tired of waiting and if Suffolk doesn’t break ground on a countywide sewer system that addresses our needs within four years of taking office, I will not run for reelection.”
Zeldin served as an aide to State Senator Kenneth P. LaValle. The Shirley resident studied at the University at Albany, graduated from Albany Law School, and earned his commission through Army ROTC. He was a paratrooper, prosecutor and magistrate with the 82nd Airborne Division and XVIII Airborne Corps. In the summer of 2006, he was a JAG attorney deployed to Iraq. He is currently an attorney at Raiser & Kenniff on Long Island.
