MASTIC, NY (04/17/2008)(readMedia)-- The endorsed Republican candidate for New York’s First Congressional District today announced his support for a proposed Gas Tax Moratorium that would ease the burden on America’s most heavily taxed population.
Lee Zeldin, seeking to represent Eastern Long Island in Congress, said today that he agreed with proposed legislation that would halt the federal excise tax on gasoline between Memorial Day and Labor Day.
“Many families like mine are feeling the financial strain of paying for gasoline that is up over 40% since the beginning of 2007,” said Zeldin. “State and federal government have a responsibility to protect Long Islanders being over burdened by our unreasonably high cost of living. A gas tax moratorium is a first step in dealing with sky-rocketing fuel prices.”
Easing the federal excise tax over the summer benefits Long Islanders especially, said Zeldin.
“Thanks to our beautiful beaches, Eastern Long Island is a terrific destination between June and August and I’d love to see our folks keep a few more of their hard-earned dollars as they enjoy the summer,” said Zeldin. “And hopefully, some of those savings can go towards our small businesses and helping our local economy.”
Zeldin thinks that over the course of the summer the savings would go a long way towards restoring faith in the intentions of their elected officials.
“Perception is reality and constituents want to see their leaders go to bat for them,” said Zeldin. “Every little bit helps and this is a terrific show of good faith by a government that has been woefully lax in taking care of the public.”
Zeldin served as an aide to State Senator Kenneth P. LaValle. The Shirley resident studied at the University at Albany, graduated from Albany Law School, and earned his commission through Army ROTC. He was a paratrooper, prosecutor and magistrate with the 82nd Airborne Division and XVIII Airborne Corps. In the summer of 2006, he was a JAG attorney deployed to Iraq. He is currently an attorney at Raiser & Kenniff on Long Island.
