SPRINGFIELD, IL (09/11/2013)(readMedia)-- Sgt. Maj. Allan Freeland of Mason City, Ill., the senior enlisted adviser of operations for the Illinois Army National Guard, was awarded the Meritorious Service Medal at Camp Lincoln in Springfield, Ill., Sept. 8.

Freeland will retire in October, after more than three and a half decades of military service.

Brig. Gen. Johnny Miller of Tamms, Ill., the Assistant Adjutant General – Army of the Illinois National Guard, presented Freeland with the medal for exceptionally meritorious service during his 36-year military career.

In his 36 years Freeland served in every enlisted leadership position from squad leader to brigade senior enlisted adviser and finally state operations senior enlisted adviser.

Freeland deployed to Iraq in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom December 2003 to February 2005 as the noncommissioned officer in charge of operations with the 1st Battalion, 106th Aviation Regiment in Peoria, Ill.
