Harrisburg, PA – Last evening, the American Council of Engineering Companies of Pennsylvania (ACEC/PA) honored engineering firms at the organization's annual Diamond Awards for Engineering Excellence gala at The Marriott at Penn Square, Lancaster, PA.
This year's winners strengthened our infrastructure, enhanced public safety, raised the engineering profession's profile, and offered sustainable, economical solutions for clients and taxpayers. The winning projects are as diverse as the firms involved.
The Grand Conceptor Award, the highest honor bestowed upon an individual project for innovative techniques, sustainability, and complexity, was awarded to PA Route 28, East Ohio Street Improvements, Designed by Michael Baker International, Moon Township, PA, for the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation District 11-0. PA Route 28 is a principal arterial among downtown Pittsburgh, the Pennsylvania Turnpike, and northeastern suburbs, and is a major connector to I-579, I-279, and I-376. While most of Route 28 had been upgraded to a limited-access highway, the two-mile segment between the Chestnut Street ramps and the Millvale Borough Interchange remained an at-grade facility, with intersections, local streets, residences, businesses, driveways, and a historic church along the west side of the roadway. This section of highway had been plagued by limited capacity, traffic congestion, and accidents due to narrow lanes, lack of shoulders, heavy traffic congestion, and insufficient sight distances.
The Best Panel Award, which recognizes the top entry based on text quality and visual appeal, was presented for the Pennypack Trail, designed by Michael Baker International, for Montgomery County.
Ten projects received Honor Awards for their contributions to excellence in engineering. Through exceptional planning and engineering design, these award-winning projects significantly contribute to the quality of life for Pennsylvania citizens. These awards also recognize the involved design professionals for their expertise and dedication to the engineering profession. The award winners are as follows, in order of category:
