ACEC/PA is Honored to Present David S. Lowdermilk, P.E. the 20th Annual Distinguished Award of Merit at Annual Diamond Awards Gala

Harrisburg, PA – The Distinguished Award of Merit recognizes an individual in the engineering profession who has made an outstanding contribution to the advancement of the consulting engineering profession and service to the American Council of Engineering Companies of Pennsylvania (ACEC/PA).

Mr. Lowdermilk has contributed exponentially to the engineering profession and has advocated for the advancement of the consulting, engineering profession throughout his 35-year career.

A registered Professional Engineer in 10 states, Mr. Lowdermilk is an engineer and manager serving in the planning, design, and construction of transportation infrastructure. Mr. Lowdermilk's career has been based in Pennsylvania, serving as Project Manager or Principal-in-Charge on significant infrastructure improvement programs. From 1991 to 2000, he served in the Philadelphia office of Parsons Brinckerhoff, first as Chief Highway Engineer and then as Operations Manager for the office. In August 2014, Mr. Lowdermilk became WSP | Parsons Brinckerhoff's Vice President/Senior Area Manager of Statewide Operations for Pennsylvania and oversees nearly 400 employees with offices in Philadelphia, Pittsburgh, Bethlehem, Lancaster, and Camp Hill.

Mr. Lowdermilk first became an active volunteer in ACEC/PA in 1995. He served in his first official role as Eastern Chapter President in 2000, a role in which he served for many years. From 2007 until 2014, Mr. Lowdermilk served on the ACEC/PA Executive Committee. He served as President during the 2013-2014 fiscal year, and ended his tenure as Immediate Past President in 2014-2015. Mr. Lowdermilk continues to serve as an active member in ACEC/PA. Aside from his contributions to engineering, Mr. Lowdermilk has been an active member in his community, serving diligently within several different roles. His commitment to not only his career, but also his community, distinguishes him among many of his peers.

In addition to ACEC/PA contributions, Mr. Lowdermilk is a Past President of the Delaware County Chapter of the Pennsylvania Society of Professional Engineers. His professional affiliations also include American Society of Highway Engineers, Institute of Transportation Engineers, American Society of Civil Engineers, Society for Marketing Professional Services, and the International Association for Bridge Maintenance and Safety.

Mr. Lowdermilk is the author of two publications: Structural Health Monitoring of Signature Bridges: An Engineer's Perspective for the International Association of Bridge Maintenance and Safety for their 2010 International conference in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania; and A Pragmatic, Risk-based Approach to Prioritizing Bridges published for the SPIE Smart Structures/NDE Conference in San Diego, California.

Mr. Lowdermilk is truly an ambassador for the engineering profession. His commitment and passion for educating younger generations to pursue engineering as a career is vital not only to the community, but also to the future of consulting engineering. Mr. Lowdermilk has reached out through speaking engagements with middle school students and enjoys participating in job fairs for various age groups.

Aside from Mr. Lowdermilk's dedication to his career, he also possesses a passion for contributing to the community. Mr. Lowdermilk has volunteered for several community-based groups throughout his 35-year-long career. For over 20 years, Mr. Lowdermilk has volunteered at the Players Club of Swarthmore, a non-profit community theatre organization. Mr. Lowdermilk has assisted with the design, building, and painting for upcoming shows, and has applied his project management skills in serving as both Stage Manager and Club Maintenance Manager for the group. Mr. Lowdermilk also volunteers with Wasted Talent Productions as a partner in a business venture that provides technical theatrical expertise to high school and middle school groups. He has been actively involved in his community's synagogue, serving as a member of the Temple Brotherhood, Temple House and Grounds Committee, Temple Choir, and third baseman on the softball team. His volunteer activities have extended to groups such as the Strath Haven School District's theatre department, the Creekside Swim Club where he served on the Board of Directors, and the Wallingford-Swarthmore Neighborhood Schools Foundation where he served as Treasurer.

Dave Lowdermilk is trusted by his clients, admired by his peers, and serves as a true example of living the value and ethics of today's consulting engineering profession.

The 2016 Distinguished Award of Merit was presented to David S. Lowdermilk, P.E. at the 2016 ACEC/PA Diamond Awards Banquet on March 10, 2016 at The Marriott at Penn Square, Lancaster, PA.
