LOUISVILLE KY (06/04/2014)(readMedia)-- More than 700,000 men, women, and children in Kentucky and Southern Indiana are affected by lung diseases such as asthma, COPD, and lung cancer. In the United States, more than 6 million children suffer from asthma, which is the most common serious chronic disease of childhood.

In addition, asthma accounts for one third of all pediatric emergency room visits and is a leading cause of school absenteeism.

Laura Ledford knows these statistics all too well. She is an asthmatic and a mother who has seen two of her three children suffer with asthma, but it wasn't until November 5th, 2012 that asthma totally changed her life. That was the day her 9 year old son, Christopher, died of an asthma attack. The entire Ledford family and others in the Brandenburg community have channeled their grief into action. They became advocates for the American Lung Association lobbying for clean air in the 2013 General Assembly and now they have signed on for the annual Fight for Air Walk with a team appropriately called "Christopher's Army". To date they have already raised over $4,000.

The American Lung Association will hold its annual "Fight for Air" Walk on Saturday, June 7, 2014 at Iroquois Park. The Walk will help raise money and awareness in the fight for healthy lungs and clean air. Registration begins at 8 a.m. and the Walk starts at 9 a.m.

Those interested in walking can sign up as an individual or form a team of walkers. Teams can be corporate or family and friends. The Walk is family-friendly and will include fundraising incentives, refreshments, music, and exhibits. Visit www.ffawalklouisville.org to register.

The American Lung Association appreciates the support of its sponsors of this year's Walk: Kindred Healthcare (Presenting), RecoverCare, UK Healthcare, Humana Caresource, Genentech, Louisville Cyberknife, Family Allergy and Asthma, WAVE3 and 97.5 WAMZ.

Now in its second century, the American Lung Association is the leading organization working to save lives by improving lung health and preventing lung disease. With your generous support, the American Lung Association is "Fighting for Air" through research, education and advocacy.
