Activated Guardsmen Assist the Public During Winter Storm

Soldiers Take to the Roads and Offer Assistance to Motorists

RALEIGH, NC (01/12/2011)(readMedia)-- The North Carolina National Guard Soldiers who were called up for State Active Duty provided valuable assistance during the most recent winter storm.

A total of 12 Soldiers reported to armories in Moore, Anson and Richmond Counties and assisted local authorities and Emergency Management with aiding stranded motorists due to icy road conditions.

There were multiple HUMVEE teams in three locations consisting of two to three vehicles and four to six Soldiers per team. The Soldiers activated for assistance were mostly from the 30th Heavy Brigade Combat Team and 130th Maneuver Enhancement Brigade, which are based out of Clinton and Charlotte respectively. Due to improved road conditions, the Guardsmen were deactivated yesterday afternoon by N.C. Emergency Management.

The teams were responsible for completing 10 missions that assisted motorists with getting stuck vehicles out and picking up those who were stranded.

The assistance was the second time the N.C. Guard was activated this winter season. They were called upon in December 2010 after the state received its first Christmas snowfall since 1948. The Guard continues to mobilize for all types of significant weather events, coordinated through N.C. Emergency Management, and brings a great deal of knowledge and expertise to these types of operations.
