Alabama National Guard Assisting in Storm Response

MONTGOMERY (04/27/2011)(readMedia)-- The Alabama National Guard has activated 35 Soldiers on State Active Duty to assist the Alabama Emergency Management Agency in response to the governor's declaration of a state of emergency due to today's storms and those anticipated later this evening.

The Alabama Emergency Management Agency has requested assistance in Montgomery, Walker, and Cullman Counties, as well as at the AEMA headquarters. Currently, the Alabama National Guard is assisting in tarp delivery and road clearing missions, as well as preparing for a greater response should it be needed throughout the evening as we experience more severe weather across the state.

"Additional requests are in the works and will be supported by the Alabama Guard," said Alabama National Guard Deputy Director of Military Support, Lt. Col. Jim Hawkins. "With storms continuing and damage assessments still coming in, we anticipate a significant increase in requests for Guard assistance. The Guard is ready to support these requests."

Providing defense support to civilian authorities is a core mission for the Alabama National Guard. Our Soldiers and Airman are highly trained, well equipped and ready to respond to assist our fellow citizens in Alabama. We will support AEMA in every way possible during this state of emergency, utilizing our unique capabilities, training and equipment.
