Athletics At The Albany Academies Thrive During Fall Season

Four varsity teams solidify outstanding seasons with championship victories

ALBANY, NY (10/30/2007)(readMedia)-- Four varsity sports teams at The Albany Academies – The Albany Academy (AA) and Albany Academy for Girls (AAG) – concluded their outstanding seasons this fall by winning league and sectional championships recently.

The Boys Varsity Golf team (AA), led by Coach Jak Bestle, finished second behind Shenendehowa in the Class A sectionals. The team also finished the regular season at 15-0 overall, 14-0 in the Colonial Council and won the CC tournament. Sam Spitalny ’09 was the medalist for the CC tournament, while Steve Quillinan ’09 and Tim DiStefano ’10 made it to the first round of the Section 2 State Qualifier. Captain Will Considine ’08, Bryan Barach ’09 and Peter Alley ’10 rounded out the top six for the season.

The Boys Varsity Soccer team (AA), led by Coach John Hofgesang, improved their record to 17-0-0 with a 5-1 victory over Notre Dame-Bishop Gibbons on Monday, October 29 in a quarterfinal match of the Sectional playoffs; the team also recently clinched the Colonial Council title.

The Girls Varsity Soccer team (AAG), led by Coach Greg Giambetti, finished 14-1-2 overall and 13-0-1 in the Central Hudson Valley League. The team won the CHVL League Championship for the first time ever as well. The Girls Varsity Soccer will host a Sectional playoffs game vs. Mayfield on Tuesday, October 30.

The Girls Varsity Tennis team (AAG), led by Coach Dr. Paul Caron and Assistant Coach Joe Jacobs, recently defeated Ichabod Crane 7-0 to win the Class B Championship.

In addition, Jimmer Bennett ’09 of the Varsity Football team (AA) recently broke the Section II career receiving record with 111 catches. Jimmer, selected as a team captain this year, is a wide receiver and defensive back for the team; he has been on the varsity team since 9th grade.

We congratulate our student-athletes and coaches at The Albany Academies for their superb efforts on the field during the fall season.

The Albany Academies is home to the two campuses of The Albany Academy (West Campus) and Albany Academy for Girls (East Campus), which share a nearly 200-year-old tradition of quality, single-gender independent school education. Both campuses bring with them deeply treasured values of community, tradition, and purpose to the newly formed school known as The Albany Academies.
