The Brooklyn Hospital Center today unveiled its new Cardiac Catheterization Suite, located at the hospital on DeKalb Avenue in Brooklyn.
“Our patients will see immediate benefits,” said Richard B. Becker, M.D., President and Chief Executive Officer. “This is just the latest investment we are proud to announce, not just because it is a significant improvement for the hospital but because it is a great benefit to the people of Brooklyn as well.”
Cardiac catheterization examines patients for blockages in the heart and coronary arteries. The test looks at blood flow in the arteries, blood pressure and flow in the chambers of the heart and function of the heart.
“The new lab will translate into less surgery, fewer x-rays, the highest quality medical imaging, quicker recovery time, and better preventative care for our patients,” stated Cardiologist, Dr. Sarath Reddy. “These assets, combined with an experienced staff, will allow us to give the people of Brooklyn the advanced level of care they deserve.”
Among its many uses, Brooklyn’s new high-tech lab will allow physicians to detect Peripheral Vascular Disease (PVD). PVD refers to diseases of blood vessels outside the heart and is most often a narrowing of vessels that carry blood to the legs, arms, stomach or kidneys. “This really is the best of both worlds. We have over a decade of experience and now we are matching that with a brand new state-of-the-art catheterization lab,” says Frank Iacovone, M.D., Chief of Cardiology.
An added benefit created by the new lab is a more comprehensive and seamless line of communication between Brooklyn’s staff, patients, and referring physicians. New electronic medical record software will insure sharing information is not only open and secure but that those lines are enhanced to allow a more fluid exchange of information. “Referring physicians will be receiving same-day information on their patients when they visit us. In addition, this service will provide physicians with a secured web-based system so that they can log in and access their patient’s information from the comfort of their offices,” said Iacovone. Referring physicians will often receive an update on their patient’s visit to the hospital within 60 minutes.
