ALBANY, NY (11/30/2011)(readMedia)-- A Symphony of Lights celebration is slated for State Street in downtown Albany, New York on Thursday, December 1, 2011 at 5:30 PM on the sidewalk in front of the Tech Valley Communications building (corner of North Pearl Street and State Street). Mayor Gerald D. Jennings and the Downtown Albany Business Improvement District (BID) Executive Director Georgette Steffens will share a few words before unveiling the new holiday light display, highlighting the recent State Street rehabilitation. Following the flipping of the switch, the band Chicago will take the stage for a brief a cappella hoiday performance. Fireworks will conclude the ceremony.
The celebration event is free and open to the public. Food and beverages will be available by local merchants.
The rehabilitation of State Street commenced in April 2011 from Broadway to Eagle Street in downtown Albany. The multi-million dollar reconstruction project included the milling and resurfacing of the roadway and curb as well as the replacement of sidewalks, new median planters, a new traffic signal at Lodge Street and landscape and streetscape amenities. ADA-compliant amenities were also added throughout the State Street corridor.
"It is a true testament to the vibrancy of downtown Albany that a legendary band like Chicago comes out to play with historic State Street as the backdrop," said Georgette Steffens, Executive Director (BID).
Chicago is in town Thursday night for a scheduled performance at the Palace Theatre at 8:00 PM. According to the Palace Theatre's website, Chicago is one of the longest-running and most successful rock groups of all time, with over 100 million albums sold worldwide since their formation in 1967. Tickets are still available at the Palace Box Office or at ticketmaster.com, or by calling 1-800-745-3000.
"I want to thank all who have helped make tonight's rededication of Albany's "main street" a reality. The new roadway, new amenities, new lighting and other improvements further enhance Albany's downtown experience for all! In addition, having the award-winning group Chicago as part of tonight's festivities makes tonight truly memorable," said Mayor Gerald D. Jennings.
State Street will be closed from North Pearl Street to Lodge Street in both directions beginning at 5:00 PM until 6:15 PM.
