DES MOINES, IA (02/26/2018) (readMedia)-- Members of the Cedar Rapids Education Association, Teamsters, Service Employees International Union (SEIU) and concerned community partners will attend the Cedar Rapids Community School Board meeting tonight to speak about the school district's opening proposal.
The Cedar Rapids Education Association believes the Cedar Rapids School District proposal to change the Master Contract to a Handbook would negatively impact educator retention and morale. A Handbook, unlike a Master Contract, willl generally not create a legally enforceable agreement with employees and may be changed at any time by the District.
Speakers will discuss their concerns for school environment, safety, class size, course offerings and other items no longer available as Mandatory Topics of Bargaining in a legally binding contract and how this change could affect the health and well-being of students, educators and the community.

WHAT: | Speakers will address the school district's Opening Proposal which moved all but the Mandatory Topics of Base Wages out of the previous legally binding Master Contract into a District Handbook. This Opening Proposal was presented to CREA on January 24, 2018 in preparation for bargaining. The District's contract with the bargaining unit ends on June 30, 2018. Negotiations are underway for the 2018-19 school year. |
