Capital Region Sponsor-A-Scholar, Inc. - Troy High School Inducts 10 Students for Following School Year
Thursday, May 8, 2008 - 3:30 - Troy High School Library
ALBANY, NY (05/05/2008)(readMedia)-- Capital Region Sponsor-A-Scholar, Inc., the agency, founded by civic leaders and social entrepreneurs in 1996, currently serves 272 aspiring scholars from Troy, Albany, and Schenectady High Schools. We provide mentors, academic tutoring, and other social interactions for selected students in partnership with the public high schools. These schools, defined as “at-risk”, have a significant student percentage not meeting the minimum competency academic skill levels, based on standardized tests.
Capital Region Sponsor-A-Scholar, Inc. recruits students motivated to achieve academically who could use additional support and direction to meet their goals. Students with at least a B/C average who demonstrate leadership potential and a commitment to their education are eligible. All students at time of induction are from low-income families, as documented by their eligibility for free or reduced lunch in the schools. Induction into the program occurs in ninth grade, and is based on an application process which includes teacher and counselor nominations, letters of recommendation, and family contact. Many students are the first in their families to attend college. Sponsor-A-Scholar currently enrolls ten students per class in each of the three high schools. Students participate in the program from tenth grade through college graduation.
On May 8th at 3:30 at Troy High School Library these 10 new students will be inducted to the program for the next school year. Antasia Concepcion, Kati Drinkwine, Marissa Gasparro, Travon Jackson, Elijah Jenkins, Alexis Jordan, Bianca Jordan, George Lopez, John Pompey, Jamie Yaskanich. “These students exemplify the ambition and motivation each CRSAS student’s posseses. Each one of these kids offers unique and special talents that everyone in the program can benefit from. Not only are they committed to achieving the best possible education, but they are active in sports and community involvement. We look forward to working with them and their families.” William Corbett, President of Capital Region Sponsor-A-Scholar, Inc. The Keynote speaker will be Monica Minor, HEOP Assistant Director at Skidmore
