Champlain College Summer Institute Explores Video, Games and Social Media

Educators to Focus on Using Technology in the Classroom

BURLINGTON, VT (06/10/2010)(readMedia)-- High school, middle school and elementary school teachers will have an opportunity this summer to create videos, upload Wikis, design websites, play video games and explore how those tools and more can be used effectively in their classrooms.

The Summer Institute for Educators at Champlain College offers a five-day professional development course on campus June 28 to July 2 entitled "Reaching Today's Students: Integrating Technology into the Classroom."

According to Laurel Bongiorno, professor of education at Champlain, the hands-on institute, offers participants three graduate credits and their own FLIP video camera and will help prepare educators to use explore the use of technology as an effective teaching tool.

The Champlain College Summer Institute for Educators 2010 topics includes:

• Videos: Learn to use the FLIP camera as a tool for teaching

• Social Networking: Explore what students are using for social networking

• Wikis: Use a wiki throughout the week

• Web Design: Learn basic web design skills and explore using the website to enhance teaching

• Gaming: Consider what educators can learn from game technology and theory

• Discussion: Is there a gender gap in technology?

• Resources: Examine free and inexpensive tools on the web

• Power Point: Explore the uses of Power Point...and beyond. Have you tried Photo Story 3?

"Educators every day in the classroom are looking for new ways to engage students who are comfortable operating in the world of video games, instant information from the web, and social networking. Our focus as teachers needs to be finding ways to use those skills and interests to enhance their education rather than letting technology - or the lack of it - get in the way of learning," she explained.

Tuition for the three-credit graduate course is $1,400. The classes run daily, 8 am to 5 pm. For registration information, contact Laurel Bongiorno at Bongiorno@champlain.edu . The deadline to register is June 22.
