CAMP VIRGINIA, KUWAIT (08/20/2012)(readMedia)-- Maj. Brian Murphy of Carthage, N.C., is looking to help deployed Soldiers in more ways than just spiritual ways - he wants to teach them how to be debt free.

Murphy taught 50 Soldiers lessons he learned through noted financial expert Dave Ramsey at Camp Virginia, Kuwait, Aug 15 and 16 using Ramsey's video version of the class.

The workshop's teaching style empowers and gives hope to every Soldier, from the financially secure to the financially distressed. The program teaches small differences people can make to improve their financial future, along with tools to enhance saving and decrease spending.

Murphy said he has taught the program five times and has never been disappointed.

"I care about the Soldiers of this camp and want them to be free of the stress of debt," said Murphy.

Over the two-day course, Soldiers learned how to set up a realistic budget, the differences between savings accounts and emergency funds, the importance of an emergency fund, dumping debt and various types of investments. The class teaches people how to change their behaviors and ways of living in order to find happiness and break the chains of debt.

"It really opened my eyes when Dave said that you need a security blanket of three to six months of bills saved," said Sgt. Ashley Lasiowski of Chicago, with the 444th Chemical Company (Combat Support) in Galesburg. "I went online and set mine up today."

Murphy said the class helped him think about what is important in life, where to spend his money and what to spend it on.

"The class gave me the confidence that I need to get out of debt and stay out of it," said Lasiowski.
