NEW YORK, NY (10/07/2010)(readMedia)-- Chenango County Court Judge W. Howard Sullivan on Monday sentenced the owner of an Afton fish hatchery to 60 days in jail for fraudulently accepting workers' compensation benefits.
Edward Panus, 60, was also ordered to pay $4,500 in restitution to the New York State Insurance Fund.
Panus was convicted on three counts each of workers' compensation fraud and offering a false instrument for filing following a trial in June.
He was accused of submitting reports to the Insurance Fund stating that he was not working, while he ran the fish hatchery. He started collecting the benefits after suffering a back injury while moving sheet rock in 1988.
Panus was arrested as the result of an investigation by the New York State Insurance Department's Frauds Bureau, the Insurance Fund's Division of Confidential Investigations and state police at Sidney.
