WORCESTER, MA (08/16/2012)(readMedia)-- Clark University senior Jane M. Carper, of Cambridge, spent the summer interning at The Massachusetts Commission for the Status of Women (MCSW), in Boston, with support from Larry Franks '73, Ellen Berelson and the Theodore H. Barth Foundation. Seven other Clark University undergraduates also received stipends to conduct internships in the non-profit sector this summer.
Carper spent three months researching and monitoring state and national legislation affecting women, conducting outreach to organizations and groups involved with issues of concern to women, and supporting and contributing to activities of the Legislative Committee.
"Working with the MCSW this summer was more than I could have hoped for," said Carper. "I was able to help plan and execute two major events for the Commission at the State House: our annual Unsung Heroine Event recognizing women all over Massachusetts who fight for equality, and hosting our first-ever major lobbying day."
In addition, Carper coordinated the Commission's 2012-2013 public hearings in four counties around Massachusetts.
"My time at the Commission was an invaluable experience for me as I was exposed to the strategies and effective practices that a state organization utilizes in order to bring about structural change for women at the state level," said Carper. "I am taking with me work experience from a non-profit state agency with a mission that aligns with my future career in social justice and equality."
Carper is a member of the Class of 2013 at Clark, and is a double major in psychology, and race, class and gender studies. On campus, Carper is involved with the Black Student Union, the Student Global AIDS Campaign and Voices for Planned Parenthood (VOX). She is the recipient of a Leadership Scholarship and an Alumni and Friends Scholarship, and is a member of Psi Chi (the international honor society in psychology) and The Fiat Lux Honor Society.
Carper is a 2009 graduate of Academy of the Pacific Rim Charter Public School in Hyde Park.
She is the daughter of Lisa and John Carper of Cambridge.
