Common Cause/NY Demands City Release Report on Yeshiva Education

Calls on Comptroller and Public Advocate to use their oversight powers

NEW YORK, NY (09/07/2017) (readMedia)-- Yesterday, The New York Times announced that the city has repeatedly stalled the release of a report on yeshivas that receive public funding, but fail to meet state requirements. Susan Lerner, Executive Director of Common Cause/NY responds:

"Yeshivas receive public monies and must meet basic standards of education. Instead a pervasive and consistent atmosphere of favoritism exists, where students suffer and politicians curry favor with power brokers who control reliable blocks of local voters. There's no excuse for delaying this study which is already grossly overdue. The Public Advocate and the Comptroller should exercise their oversight powers to evaluate city spending and its failure to protect Yeshiva students."
