Community College of Vermont Awards First Student Leadership Scholarships

MONTPELIER, VT (01/11/2013)(readMedia)-- The Community College of Vermont is pleased to announce the recipients of the 2012 Student Leadership Scholarship. The award recipients for 2012 exhibited stellar leadership qualities, such as serving as peer tutors, organizing various fund drives, participating in Tropical Storm Irene clean up events, staffing learning centers at CCV locations, and serving on CCV's Student Advisory Boards. Each recipient will receive a $1,000 award, a certificate of achievement, and will be invited to a luncheon with CCV President Joyce Judy to be held in their honor, date TBD. This year's eleven recipients are:

• Stephanie Scrivens of Bennington, VT

• Kasey Warner of Berlin, VT

• Lucas Griggs of Morrisville, VT

• Hannah Laplaca of South Royalton, VT

• Tonya Rupe of Middletown Springs, VT

• Allen Berquist of Burlington, VT

• Megan Stafford of Brattleboro, VT

• Stacy Garciadealba of Springfield, VT

• Hannah Bapp of Brownington, VT

• Danielle Martel of St. Albans, VT

• Samantha Austin of St. Johnsbury

This is CCV's first year awarding the scholarship, which in the future will be given out annually to a student from each of the College's academic centers and its online learning center. The new scholarship is designed to honor those students who demonstrate significant leadership abilities in their classrooms, their academic centers, or their communities through service learning, volunteer work, and involvement in student life at CCV. In addition, student leaders must meet the following criteria:

• Must be a degree student

• Must be enrolling for spring semester

• Must have completed at least 12 credits

• Must be in good academic standing

• Must be a leader in their community

The selection process began last fall when students, faculty, and staff from the College's twelve academic centers and its Center for Online Learning were asked to nominate students befitting the award. It is clear from this process that CCV students bring a wealth of experiences and skills to our classrooms, our learning centers, our front desks, and our communities at large. That said, this scholarship would not be possible without the efforts of faculty and staff (and other students) to recognize those contributions through their heartfelt and often eloquent nominations.

"At every CCV academic center, there are special students who exhibit great leadership, in their classes, with other students in their centers, or in their communities through service learning or other activities," said CCV President Joyce Judy. "We wanted to do something to honor and recognize these special students for the gift of leadership that they give back to CCV."
