MONTPELIER, VT (10/23/2012)(readMedia)-- Karen Clark, an academic coordinator at the Community College of Vermont's (CCV) Brattleboro academic center, was named 2012 Educator of the Year at the Vermont Educational Opportunity Programs (VEOP) conference on October 9, 2012. The award is presented annually to a faculty, staff member, tutor, or administrator who has made significant contributions to furthering educational opportunities for VEOP students.
Since 2002 Clark has worked with students in CCV-Brattleboro's TRiO Student Support Services Program, a federally funded program that helps students reach their academic potential and meet their educational and career goals. CCV's TRiO program is funded to serve only 225 students, who are selected through an application process that assesses motivation, academic need, and ability to benefit. TRiO coordinators serve as an academic mentor, advisor, transfer counselor, and resource consultant.
In a nomination letter for the award Heather Weinstein, CCV's director of TRiO Student Support Services wrote: "You may often read about Karen's students on CCV's website and in Vermont newspapers because Karen inspires her students to be leaders. Karen's TRiO students have gone on to be CCV graduation speakers, Ada Comstock scholars, Student Advisory Board Representatives on CCV's Academic Council, participants at TRiO Legislature Day, and panel members at CCV's faculty summer Institute. Karen embodies the spirit of TRiO, and she sets the bar high for professionals supporting the success of students."
CCV is Vermont's second largest college, serving more than 7,000 students each semester. With 12 locations and extensive online learning options, our students don't have to travel far from their communities to access 20 degree and six certificate programs, workforce education and secondary education initiatives, continuing education opportunities, and academic and veterans support services
