Community and Labor Join Together to Fight for Fairer Tax System in NYS

Joining with Allies from Other Community Groups and Labor, Organizations from the New Deal for New York Campaign Vow to Continue Their Long-Standing Push for Proactive Job Creation and Against Special Treatment for New York's Wealthiest

NEW YORK, NY (10/18/2011)(readMedia)-- The New Deal for New York, a coalition of community organizing groups from around New York State that fight for job creation and tax fairness in New York, today joined with allies under the campaign banner of "99 New York." The campaign will call on the Governor and Legislature to do the right thing and stop the $5 billion tax break that the wealthiest New Yorkers will receive if the supplemental tax rates on the wealthiest New Yorkers expire as planned on December 31st of this year.

New Deal groups have been aggressively pushing for fair taxation and proactive job creation efforts in New York State over the past year, leading a variety of high-profile actions including an act of civil disobedience in March 2011 that saw the south entrance of the state capitol building locked down, disrupting a major fundraiser of Governor Cuomo at The Top of the Rock in Rockefeller Plaza, and releasing "The Committee to Scam New York" with the Public Accountability Initiative documenting the many ways the 'Committee to Save New York' is gaming the system in New York for their own benefit and at the expense of the other 99% of New Yorkers. New Deal groups joined with some of their 99 New York allies for what became the Capitol Camp-in during the final hours of the 2011 budget debates.

New Deal member groups include community and faith-based organizations that are working in those low-income communities and communities of color that are most adversely impacted by the lack of jobs and shortage of public investments. Member groups in the New Deal for New York campaign include Community Voices Heard (CVH, in New York City, Newburgh, Poughkeepsie and Yonkers), Niagara Organizing Alliance for Hope (NOAH, in Niagara County), People United for Sustainable Housing (PUSH, in Buffalo), Syracuse United Neighbors (SUN), Voices of Community Activists and Leaders (VOCAL, in New York City, Westchester and Albany), and VOICE (in Erie County).
