ST. PAUL, MN (10/12/2010)(readMedia)-- Howard Patten '56, of Roseau, Minn., was inducted into the Concordia University, St. Paul, Athletic Hall of Fame on Friday, Oct. 1, 2010.
Patten graduated from Roseau High School in 1953 before getting his junior college degree at Concordia in 1956. He played in the first "dedicatory" college basketball game in the Lutheran Memorial center in the fall of 1953 and earned letters playing college basketball. He was also a member of the Concordia Junior College Track Championship teams of 1955 and 1956, competing alongside President Dr. Robert Holst. Patten was a three-sport athlete, as he was captain of the 1956 golf team and was runner-up at the Minnesota Junior College Golf Championships. In addition to his athletic achievements, Patten was College Class President and Student Council Chair in 1955-56, was active in school musicals, taught Sunday school for two years at St. Paul Anchor "Crippled Children's" Hospital and worked at Montgomery Ward's department store while in school.
Patten went on to pursue more school at Concordia Seminary in St. Louis, Mo., Drake University in Iowa and Columbia Seminary in Georgia. He is currently a parish pastor at Zion Lutheran Church in El Paso, Texas and has previously served as district mission executive and district president prior to his current calling. He and his wife, Marilyn, have two kids and six grandchildren.
