Concordia University Senior Administrator Selected to Receive Achievement Award

ST. PAUL, MINN. (09/25/2009)(readMedia)-- Concordia University, St. Paul Executive Vice President and Dean of Diversity Dr. Cheryl Chatman will be honored by Iowa State University with its College of Human Sciences Alumni Achievement Award during the University's homecoming celebration on Oct. 16, 2009. Chatman graduated from Iowa State University in 1976 with a master of science degree in Child Development.

The award recognizes Iowa State University's College of Human Sciences alumni for commendable service or distinguished achievements. Recipients of this award are selected based on national or international recognition for their achievements and the positive impact of their contributions in their field of influence.

"I was surprised and am humbled by this honor," Chatman said. "It's nice to have a place where you've received education recognize you."

Chatman received her bachelor of science in Psychology in 1974 from Bethune-Cookman College in Daytona Beach, Fla., and her doctorate in Educational Administration with an emphasis in Higher Education in 1991 from the University of North Carolina at Greensboro.

Chatman coordinates Concordia's Building Opportunities for Leadership Development (BOLD) Program, designed to nurture and enhance students' leadership potential and provide financial support to students with unmet need. She also supervises operations and activities of the Students of Color Retention/Mentoring Program. She is involved in activities to build relationships that provide Concordia University visibility, opportunities, and avenues for collaboration, coordination and mutual support with the local community. She is the co-chair of the Diversity Reality Team and Chair of the University Artwork Enhancement Task Force. She serves on various planning committees including the annual Pan-African Student Leadership Conference, the Governor's Commission for the annual Martin Luther King Celebration, and the ARTS-US Board. She also was initiated as a Thrivent Fellow in 2005, a program that identifies and helps develop qualified candidates for leadership positions in Lutheran colleges, universities, seminaries and organizations. Chatman has given numerous greetings, speeches and presentations at conferences, seminars and special campus and community events.
