D.C. National Guard recognizes 9/11 heroes Sunday at the Armory

WASHINGTON, DC (12/01/2011)(readMedia)-- The men, women and families of the D.C. National Guard will be honored during a ceremony at the D.C. National Guard Armory at 9 a.m. Sunday, Dec. 4. The focus of the ceremony is on the hundreds of D.C. Guard members who have deployed to Iraq and Afghanistan during past decade since the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks.
THERE WILL BE A LIVE BROADCAST OF D.C. GUARD MEMBERS SERVING IN AFGHANISTAN.
The broadcast will include inteerviews with members of the 121st Expeditionary Fighter Squadron made up of members from the 113th Wing from Joint Base Andrews and the Operational Support Airlift, Detachment 4, from Davison Army Airfield, Va. These units are concurrently supporting Operation Enduring Freedom.
D.C. Mayor Vincent Gray is tentatively scheduled to take part in the awards presentation. The keynote speaker is Arlington County Fire Chief James Schwartz, who will detail his experience as the incident scene commander at the Pentagon on the day of the attacks on the Pentagon and the Twin Towers in New York.
Members of the 113th Wing have been on 24/7 alert at Joint Base Andrews since the minute of the attack on the Pentagon. Their mission continues today while members of the 121st Fighter Squadron are deployed in Afghanisan. Thousands of D.C. Army and Air Guardsmen have served in dozens of deploymennts in Iraq, Afghanistan over the past ten years, and at home while continuing to support domestic missions such as Hurricane Katrina and the largest Presidential Inauguration in the nation's history.
Sunday's event is open to the public and the media is invited to attend.
