WASHINGTON, DC (06/23/2017) (readMedia)-- The District of Columbia National Guard's Youth Programs will be hosting a Youth Leaders' Camp open house and camp orientation on Saturday, 24 June 24, 2017 at the D.C. National Guard Armory from 10 a.m. – 1 p.m.
The open house is free of charge and designed to give interested parents and campers a better understanding of the camp, by asking questions, and hearing from past campers and volunteers.
The camp will be held at Camp Pendleton in Virginia Beach, Va., from July 9-21, 2017. The cost per camper is $350. ($50 non-refundable registration fee and $300 camp fee). The registration deadline has been extended to July 7, 2017.
Since 1968, the District of Columbia National Guard has conducted an annual Youth Leader's Camp for students in the D.C. Metropolitan area. The vision of the camp was to provide D.C. youth an opportunity to experience, develop and practice leadership in an environment in a camp setting away from the city. The Camp began with 68 males, (originally established for young men) and has grown to more than 150 male and female students each summer.
In past years, local businesses, organizations and parents have provided the camp's primary financial support. Members of the District of Columbia National Guard and select camp alumni serve as the camp's staff and provide the administrative and logistical support.
The Youth Leaders Camp is a 501 (c) (3) tax exempt organization, therefore contributions are tax deductible.
The camping experience is geared towards shaping teens into better citizens and future leaders. Campers will be given guidance on the importance of leadership, teamwork, mutual respect and sportsmanship. The camp curriculum is redesigned annually to help teens deal with current issues such as peer pressure, teen pregnancy, drugs/inhalants, bullying, misuse of social media, and teen suicide. Daily activities are balanced between academic instruction, hands-on application of skills taught and physical activities.
