Dayton Attorney John Cloud Receives Highest National ALA Volunteer Award

COLUMBUS OH (08/22/2014)(readMedia)-- John M. Cloud, Centerville, is the 2014 recipient of the American Lung Association's Will Ross Medal, the organization's highest national award given to volunteers who have made a significant contribution to the prevention and control of lung disease.

Established in 1952, the Medal is presented in honor of Wisconsin industrialist Will Ross, a former tuberculosis patient and one of the American Lung Association's most dedicated volunteers. He served as the first non-medical President of the Association.

Cloud, an attorney with the Dayton law firm of Rogers and Greenberg, has been a volunteer for the American Lung Association for 30 years and was just elected to the position of treasurer of the charter board of the American Lung Association of the Midland States. Based in Columbus OH, ALAMS provides programs and services to the residents of Ohio, Kentucky, Tennessee, and Michigan.

Cloud started his volunteer work in 1984 with the Miami Valley Chapter of the American Lung Association of Ohio. He served as a member of the Board of Directors of the American Lung Association of Ohio from 1990 until that organization's 2007 merger that formed the American Lung Association of the Midland States. During his time on the ALAO board, he held various posts including Treasurer, Chairman of the Diversity Committee, Vice-Chair and Chair.

His volunteer work at the national level spanned the years 2002 through 2013 with Cloud serving on the Nationwide Assembly, as a member of the Board of Directors, and on various committees.

In addition to his volunteer work with the American Lung Association, Cloud's public service has included: member and then Chairman of the Board of the New Choices Community Charter School in downtown Dayton; member of and then President of the Board of Directors of the Miami Valley Episcopal Russian Network; and as Chair of the Endowment Committee of Christ Episcopal Church.

The mission of the American Lung Association is to save lives through the prevention of lung disease and lung health. Originally founded in the early 1900's to fight tuberculosis, the association now is actively involved with a variety of lung health issues working through research, advocacy and education initiatives.
