Dentists to Offer Screenings at Belmont Racetrack

Free Oral Cancer Exams Friday, October 9

ALBANY, NY (10/02/2009)(readMedia)-- Members of the Nassau County, Queens County and Suffolk County Dental Societies, components of the New York State Dental Association (NYSDA) serving Long Island and Metro New York, will be conducting free oral cancer screenings at Belmont Park racetrack in Elmont, New York on Friday, October 9 starting at noon.

"Oral cancer screenings are quick, painless and can save lives," said Dr. Robert Trager, the Nassau committee chair coordinating the event. Dr. Trager notes that at least 25 individuals with suspicious lesions have been identified in the past six years at similar events at tracks statewide and that those individuals were referred for follow-up treatment. "We are truly saving lives," he said.

Knowing the risk factors and taking steps to prevent precancerous lesions from developing can help limit the influence oral cancer can have on your life. Early detection, a healthy lifestyle and regular dental visits are also important. Most people are not aware that dentists check for signs of oral cancer during routine dental exams.

Racing fans can visit screening areas on October 9 at various locations around the lower level of the track, and those screened will be given free oral health care products. In recognition of the event, a race will be named on behalf of the participating dental societies.-30-
