Dr. John J. Liang, D.M.D., of Utica has been elected Vice-President of the New York State Dental Association

ALBANY, NY (07/12/2012)(readMedia)-- Dr. John J. Liang, D.M.D., of Utica has been elected Vice-President of the New York State Dental Association (NYSDA). Dr. Liang is slated to serve as the association's president in 2014; he previously served as president of the Fifth District Dental Society in 2002. Dr. Liang has been a member of NYSDA for 27 years.

The long-time New Hartford resident, served as president of the 700 member Fifth District Dental Association (FDDA) in 2002. The Fifth District encompasses Onondaga, Oneida, Oswego, Herkimer, Jefferson, Lewis, Madison and St. Lawrence counties.

Dr. Liang graduated from University of Pittsburgh School of Dental Medicine receiving his D.M.D. in 1980. Dr. Liang also holds a master's degree in forensic chemistry (summa cum laude, 1976) and a bachelor's degree (cum laude, 1973) from the University of Pittsburgh. He has served as an attending dentist at the SUNY Canton dental hygiene program since 2006 as well as an attending dentist for the dental residency program at Faxton-St.Luke's Hospital since 2008.

His dental career began in 1980 with the United States Air Force and continued through 1985. Dr. Liang entered private practice in 1985, serving the Utica community for 27 years.

His various leadership roles in the state dental association are the result of his commitment to finding the best ways to serve the community and improving the dental profession. "Whenever we can improve our methods of service to the community and to those under our care," said Liang, "that's a positive thing, deserving our input and commitment."

An active participant in organized dentistry for many years, Dr. Liang has been a delegate to the American Dental Association (ADA) and NYSDA, as well as past member of the NYSDA Executive Committee. He has been a member of the Oneida-Herkimer County Dental Society since 1985.

Dr. Liang has been a highly involved and active member of organized dentistry, and over the years he has received many honors recognizing his efforts including the Achievement Award from the United States Air Force, and fellowships with the American College of Dentists, the Pierre Fauchard Academy, and the International College of Dentists.

Active in his community, he has served as coach and regional commissioner of the American Youth Soccer Organization, past volunteer to Boy Scouts of America (father of an Eagle Scout). Personally, his hobbies include photography, woodworking, landscaping, and automobile restoration. Dr. Liang has two children: Kyle and Kirsten (Getchell), son-in-law Brian Getchell and one grandchild, Michael Connor.
