SAVANNAH, GA (05/28/2013)(readMedia)-- Cherry Creek High School graduate and SCAD B.F.A. Illustration student John Sutherland, recently won first place at the annual Sand Arts Festival held on Tybee Island's North Beach. Sutherland won top honors in the Sand Relief category.
Sutherland and teammates Chris Alfaro, Chock Bun Lam, and Cory Brangman designed and collaboratively sculpted the imaginative creation. The group's stunning relief piece features realistic looking dinosaur bones emerging from the sand, reminding the viewer of a paleontological dig.
"The inspiration came from a collaborative brainstorm session. We wanted the piece to leave the viewer wondering what could be hidden further underneath the sandy beach," Sutherland said. "I'm happy we got to share our idea with all who ventured out to north beach on that beautiful day."
The competition showcases students' talents by inviting them to design and build inventive, eye-catching sand sculptures in a variety of categories. Students representing all schools and disciplines competed for $5,000 in prizes.
Originating in the early 1990s as a field trip for foundation studies classes, the SCAD Sand Arts Festival has evolved into the perfect 3-D sculptural complement to the Sidewalk Arts Festival held in Forsyth Park each April. Visit scad.edu/sandarts for full event details and competition rules.
