BOSTON, MA (01/13/2011)(readMedia)-- The Constance Pyne Achin Scholarship at Fisher College has named Desire Soares of Tewksbury, Massachusetts its first award recipient. Soares, who is pursuing an associate's degree in early childhood education, was awarded $500.
The daughter of Louis Soares, Desire graduated from Tewksbury Memorial High School in 2010 where she was first exposed to working with young children through her school's on-site day care. She plans to use her degree to serve diverse communities by opening her own childcare center.
The Constance Pyne Achin Scholarship Program is awarded to students from the Greater Lowell area attending Fisher College. The program honors the late political and community activist Connie Achin.
Achin was active in many charitable and civic organizations in Greater Lowell. She served as president of St. Joseph's Hospital Ladies' Guild, president of the D'Youville Manor Ladies' Guild, and volunteered at the Loella Dewing School in Tewksbury, where she worked extensively with special needs children. Achin was the president of the Greater Lowell Women's Republican Club, and was elected to the Massachusetts Republican State Committee. She was appointed a Middlesex County Deputy Sheriff and continued to serve Lowell's citizens later in her life as both an Election Commissioner, and as a Commissioner of the Lowell Housing Authority.
