Donald Hinners Named Iowan of the Day

DES MOINES, IA (07/30/2014)(readMedia)-- The Iowa State Fair Blue Ribbon Foundation and Cookies Food Products are pleased to present Don Hinners of Carroll as an Iowan of the Day for the 2014 Iowa State Fair.

Hinners is the true definition of an Iowan. He served in the Army, works on a farm and is an active member in his church. In 1975, Hinners was on a committee that helped create the Halbur University Scholarship Fund. Now he spends his free time cleaning up local parks and raising money for the Iowa Beef Industry.

Michelle Bonnema, Hinners granddaughter and nominator, said, "Grandpa Don has taught me so much about how to live a good life, serving as the embodiment of Iowa integrity, dependability, community and work ethic. He's a true family man who is living every day with the intention of making Iowa a better place."

To help make Iowa a better place, Hinners spends time with the youth and elders of Carroll. He is involved with 4-H by showing cattle with his grandkids at the county and state Fairs as well as serving as a county director and 4-H leader. Along with the youth, Hinners also enjoys working with elders by visiting the St. Anthony Nursing Home in Carroll, Iowa several times a month, and even taking the workers to his farm during harvest season.

Hinners' day of recognition will be Thursday, August 14 at the 2014 Iowa State Fair. Along with accommodations at the Downtown Des Moines Marriott, he will receive a cash prize, grandstand tickets and use of the Iowan of the Day golf cart. Hinners will also receive a special introduction on August 14 at 2:15p.m. on the Anne and Bill Riley Stage.

Founded in 1997, the Iowan of the Day program allows the Blue Ribbon Foundation to recognize Iowa's most outstanding individuals. The program continues to honor Iowan's across the state who have made a difference in others' lives, while upholding the characteristics associated with Iowa-dependability, integrity, hard work and sense of community.

The Blue Ribbon Foundation is a non-profit 501(c)3 organization. Since its inception in 1993, the Foundation has generated over $100 million for renovations and improvements to the Iowa State Fairgrounds.
