ALBANY, NY (06/07/2010)(readMedia)-- The Downtown Albany Business Improvement District (BID) will be awarding Candace King Weir with the 2010 Civic Arts Patron award and David Alan Miller with the 2010 Norman S. Rice ACE (Arts-Culture-Education) award at its Sculpture in the Streets Garden Party fundraiser in Downtown Albany on June 18th, 2010.
Weir founded the Albany-based CL King & Associates, one of the first woman-owned broker/dealer FINRA-registered firms, and turned the business into a well-respected institutional research company. Weir was nominated and chosen for this year's Civic Arts Patron Award for her continuous commitment to support of the Albany Arts community for such organizations as the Albany Institute of History & Art and the NYS Museum, and more regionally through The Corporation of Yaddo. Her continuous support of these local institutions is critical to the advancement of the Arts in Albany.
David Alan Miller continues to prove himself as a creative orchestra builder and arts community leader in his position of conductor and music director for the Albany Symphony Orchestra (ASO). Since taking the position in 1992, Miller's exploration of educational programming, community outreach efforts, and recording initiatives have bolstered the ASO's reputation as an innovative leader in American symphonic music. He frequently performs as a guest conductor with major symphonies across the world and has been recognized for his achievements by many prominent arts institutions. The BID chose Miller to receive this year's Norman S. Rice ACE award for his significant accomplishment in exposing the Arts to the public both in the Albany region as well as on an international level. His talent and community involvement play a key role in advancing the BID's goal of sustaining a vibrant arts culture in Albany.
"The Capital Region is very fortunate to have many loyal supporters of the Arts who are especially critical to the health of these organizations in today's tenuous economy," said Georgette Steffens, Executive Director of the Downtown Albany BID. "The Downtown Albany BID itself is committed to public art by annually hosting the Sculpture in the Streets exhibit, so we are especially pleased to have the opportunity to applaud Candace's philanthropy and David's comprehensive impact on the Arts in our community." Awards will be presented at the Downtown Albany BID's Sculpture in the Streets Garden Party event on June 18, 2010 at Federal Plaza Park from 5:30pm-8:30pm. Ticket and event information can be found at downtownalbany.org or by calling 518.465.2143 x18. Proceeds from the event support the Downtown Albany BID's annual public art initiative, Sculpture in the Streets. The 2010 exhibit, which will run from June 18 through October 30, 2010, will feature 17 sculptures by Seward Johnson.
