Richard Sax, Ph.D., previously Vice President of Academic Affairs & Dean of the College at Lake Erie College, was recently named Dean of Instruction & Chief Academic Officer, University of New Mexico-Valencia Campus.
Dr. Sax received his BA from Haverford College and his MA and PhD degrees at The University of Michigan, Ann Arbor. His past academic administrative appointments include his service as: Dean of the College of Arts & Humanities, Madonna University, Livonia, Michigan; Dean of the School of Arts, Humanities & Social Sciences, Fort Lewis College, Durango, Colorado; and Vice President of Academic Affairs & Dean of the College, Lake Erie College, Painesville, Ohio, where he was a tenured full Professor of English & Distinguished Teaching Professor in the Humanities.
Originally classified as a "19th-century Americanist" after writing a dissertation on Herman Melville in Ann Arbor, much of his post-doctoral scholarship and teaching have been in the area of American Indian Studies.
He has served six times on grant evaluation panels at the NEH (National Endowment for the Humanities) in Washington, D.C., as an expert in the fields of American Indian Studies and Humanities Teacher Training. He continues to serve as Co-Chair of the American Indian Literatures & Cultures section of the American Culture Association, and he currently has two different book chapters in press concerning the work of Sherman Alexie, a Spokane/Coeur d'Alene writer and filmmaker.
UNM-Valencia is a fully integrated branch campus of the University of New Mexico serving some 2,500 full-time and part-time students. The campus is located in Valencia County, New Mexico.
