LYNCHBURG, VA (12/22/2011)(readMedia)-- DuPont Community Credit Union has won 1st Place in the state Dora Maxwell Social Responsibility Recognition Award Program for credit unions, and Honorable Mention in the national Dora Maxwell competition. The Social Responsibility Recognition Award Program, sponsored by the Virginia Credit Union League and the Credit Union National Association, honors credit unions for their involvement in community projects and activities.
DCCU was recognized for its work with homeless shelters in Staunton, Harrisonburg and Shenandoah County, including the donation of $10,080 to support the work of the three shelters. The credit union raised the funds through various events, while credit union staff also volunteered their time at the shelters and collected needed items for the shelter and those utilizing its services.
"A number of families in our communities have been hard-hit by the economy and unemployment," said Gerald Hershey, president/CEO of DuPont Community Credit Union. "The resources of our local shelters have been stretched thin as more families slip into poverty and homelessness. It's critical that we all reach out and lend our neighbors a helping hand."
