Energy upgrades at Freeport armory wrapped up

SPRINGFIELD, IL (12/23/2016)(readMedia)-- The Illinois National Guard Readiness Center in Freeport, Illinois, has been outfitted with a geothermal heating and cooling system, replacing the worn out system in the 58 year old facility.

The $1.7 million project was completed this past fall. In addition to greatly improving occupant comfort and adding additional air conditioned space in the facility, the system is also expected to save more than $6,000 per year in utility costs.

"The old HVAC system was at the end of its useful life," said Col. Craig Holan, the Illinois National Guard's Construction and Facility Management Officer. "This new geothermal system exceeds current energy and ventilation standards for new construction."

The nearly 21,000 square feet armory is home to the Illinois National Guard's 333rd Military Police Company. The Illinois Clean Energy Community Foundation provided the Illinois National Guard with a $42,000 grant toward the project.
