About "Codex Gigas: New Paintings and Work from C. Graham Carson"
Since 1994, C. Graham Carson has created paintings, jewelry, sculpture, and steelwork in his Rochester-based Myrmidon Studio. He will present his paintings and assemblages – paintings with small sculptures or objects mounted to them – at Nazareth College Arts Center's Colacino Gallery from August 23-September 20, 2013.
As a painter, Carson works with acrylics, into which he mixes stone dust; natural earth pigments; and metal dust and shavings from his studio floor. "Generally, when you look at a painting your eye sees the wall too, so it becomes its own sort of 3-D sculptural piece against a background," he explained. "By adding objects or metal shavings, I'm creating paintings that are naturally more sculptural. Taking it another step, when I use materials that oxidize, they create their own pigments that change the painting. I really enjoy the textures and the mix of mediums this process creates."
Carson draws his inspiration from a variety of sources. He is fascinated by anthropology, archaeology, and the history of places, and objects attached to his paintings often reflect that. "Some of my inspiration comes from numbers in history and dates," he said. "Sometimes the influence of history is very obvious, and in other works you have to look for it. But there is always this mystery of time, place, distance, philosophy running through my work."
A resident of Pittsford, New York, Carson has taught at Nazareth College, and is currently a full-time instructor at Rochester Institute of Technology.
