Freedom Salute planned for returning Afghanistan war veterans

District of Columbia National Guard Members to be given a Hero's Welcome Home

WASHINGTON, DC (04/11/2013)(readMedia)-- Please join the District of Columbia National Guard for a Freedom Salute Ceremony to honor Soldiers who have returned from an overseas deployment to Afghanistan.

WHO:

DC National Guard, 273rd Military Police Company

WHAT:

Eighty D.C. National Guard Soldiers who deployed for a year in support of Operation Enduring Freedom in Afghanistan will be honored with a ceremony and awards.

Family, friends and employers will gather to celebrate the soldiers' successful deployment and safe return. The ceremony will honor the patriotism, courage and sacrifices of each soldier. Freedom Salute also honors the soldiers' families, friends and employers who provide invaluable support to deployed Guardsmen and women.

The 273rd Military Police Company provided military police assets while operating out of Bagram Air Base, Afghanistan. In addition, they managed a dining facility, managed mail operations for the base, conducted logistics and personnel convoys and provided physical security details to American personnel. Many of the service members have deployed at least once previously, some as many as three times. Others have served in task forces to support the City of Washington during key events such as presidential inaugurations, the Martin Luther King, Jr. Memorial dedication, Snowpocalypse relief efforts.
